Abstract
This paper highlights an often-overlooked public health crisis emerging from armed conflict: toxic dust exposure generated by large-scale destruction. While global attention focuses on immediate humanitarian impacts, the long-term health risks of inhaled particulate matter remain underexamined. Drawing on evidence from the World Trade Center (WTC) disaster, this study outlines how debris dust may contain carcinogens, heavy metals, and persistent organic pollutants, posing risks to respiratory, cardiovascular, and neurological health, as well as increasing cancer incidence. In war zones, continuous destruction intensifies exposure, particularly among vulnerable populations. The paper argues for early development of exposure databases, environmental surveillance, and toxicological mapping to inform future health responses. Without such preparedness, affected populations may face a delayed but substantial disease burden over decades, underscoring the need to integrate environmental health into conflict-related public health strategies.
